Coffee Wars

Now that exams are on its way, it’s time to get thinking about studying and most importantly about Coffee.

The two places people always rave about, are escaping to Carrboro and either going to Open Eye Cafe or Looking Glass Cafe.

So which one is better? I will let you decide.

Looking Glass Cafe:

It has always been hard for me to decide. So what is your favorite?

Best Late Night

Since Easter has just passed, the next big holiday at least for us UNCers is what we call LDOC (Last day of classes). Being a Senior (tear, tear), it is time to get in our final grades and celebrate our last few weeks in college. With graduation looming in, our time is limited, primarily our bar nights. And what does every college student do after a night on the town – eat, eat, eat.

These are the places to go after a late night on the Hill:

Old Chicago: a new, hot spot, OC (as I like to call it) has $2 pizzas from 10 PM until 2 AM. Now that I call a deal

Qdoba: a classic favorite, Qdoba is on Franklin St. and easily a walk from any bar. Late night tip would be the queso and chips (you can never go wrong)

Toppers: feel like ordering in? Toppers understands. With its top seller being Bacon chocolate toppers, sounds weird? Trust me it is everything you could ever hope for at 2 AM – chocolate, bacon, and CARBS

Time Out: I remember when I was a freshman. A younger spot because it is directly in front of Granville. But be sure to stop by before graduation for old times sakes. Recommendation: Breakfast food or Nothing

Jimmy Johns: at any time in the day you can never go wrong with a JJ sub. Plus super fast delivery for those who just cannot wait

BUNS: late night burgers and fries? BUNS knows how to do it at any hour of the day. Do not miss out on their unique dipping sauces.

Insomnia Cookies: if you are craving something a little sweeter, fear not, these cookies have got your back. Be sure to order the chocolate chip as they melt in your mouth in one bite.

If you just finished a crazy night in Chapel Hill or have been cramming in the library for hours, Chapel Hill has late night places that will satisfy any of your desires usually closing around 2 to 3 AM.

Best Brunch Spots

Now that it is the week before Easter and Spring here, it is time to do my favorite activity more than once during the week: BRUNCHING.

With several places open only on Sundays, be sure to brunch at least twice every week until Graduation.

Some of the best places are

1. The Bagel Bar – I dedicated an entire blog to this little spot because A. it is unknown and B. it has the best bagels and cream cheese in this area.

Unknown-2

2. Acme: The Make-your-own Bloody Mary and Scallop Eggs Benedict is sure to entice you for more. Another benefit is that Saturday brunch is available here.

3. 411 West: Their coffee is fantastic and their french toast is prime. Be sure to come in on a Sunday for brunching and game watching.

4. Venable: Never can go wrong with this brunch. Amazing French toast, weekly Eggs Benedict specials, and French press coffee. Again brunch is available on Saturdays as well.

5. Weathervane -Southern Seasons: only the finest ingredients, their omelets are surely unique and enticing enough for you to become a frequenter.

Other great places that have more American style breakfast and 7 days a week breakfast are Elmo’s and Coffee shop

A Taste of Chapel Hill History – Merritt’s

Home of the world famous BLT, Merritt’s is a quaint little mark of Chapel Hill history that opened in 1929.

Image

“During the 49 years Merritt ran the store, Merritt’s became more than a gas station. Students and veterans came for the social atmosphere. Law students sat around Merritt’s pot-bellied stove, on a bench Merritt nicknamed the “liar’s bench” (Laura Oleniacz, MyNC).

Loving this place and calling it a second home, I try to go here as much as possible.

MUST GET – BLT (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato)

Now some additions and combinations

Personal favorite: Double BLT and avocado

Local’s favorite: Double BLT, avocado, and pimento cheese

Mix it up: Double BLT/Regular BLT, avocado, and chicken salad

Everything: Double BLT/Regular BLT, avocado, chicken salad, and pimento cheese

Just make sure you eat here before you graduate, and you come back as an alumni.

Best Frozen Yogurt in Chapel Hill? YOPO (Yogurt Pump) takes the cake!

Ever have a long day of classes?

All you want is some delicious ice cream or better yet, frozen yogurt?
Well, you are in luck because Chapel Hill has one of my favorite little spots! With its service being incredible and its ever changing Froyo flavors this is definitely a place I would not miss after a long day at the library/gym or after a cute date on Franklin

Personally my favorite flavors are the sobers and every week they have a new flavor.

Best flavors so far? Anything berry –

*Blackberry Cheesecake

*Raspberry

*Blackberry (all time favorite)

*Blueberry Cheesecake

Image

After you select your flavor it is all about toppings – ones you should not miss? The berry fruits! (I think you are seeing a trend here)

*Strawberry

*Blueberry

*COOKIE DOUGH (yes, I put double)

*Cheesecake

So go out and enjoy some fat free lovin’

If you want something with a bit more fatty, try the pistachio. It is divine!!

The Hidden Gem: The Bagel Bar

“Too many people look at the holes in their life, and miss the bagel.” -Anonymous

Growing up in Miami with a large Jewish community, I was always spoiled with incredible bagels and cream cheese spots.

Unfortunately, as a Freshman, Alpine Bagel on campus did not cut it for me. I wanted something more boutiquey and less like Bruegger’s Bagels, which is more of a chain restaurant.

Luckily, I found “The Bagel Bar”.

Every month, they have the cream cheese of the month some of my favorites being blueberry cream cheese, carrot cake cream cheese, and Nutella cream cheese. Yes, I have a sweet tooth!

If you are in the mood for something savory – go for the everything bagel, scooped out with eggs, bacon or sausage, and veggie cream cheese.

Now for my favorite choices: my go-to is the cinnamon raisin and walnut raisin cream cheese (always there and always amazing)

This month’s cream cheese has been the Nutella flavor – I highly recommend it with the double chocolate bagel and Nutella cream cheese.

The bread here is fantastic and the cream cheese is even better! Do not forget to always toast your bagel and the more cream cheese the merrier!
